In 1975, Rudy Mayer, then a store designer working for the visionary Raymond Loewy, launched his own wallcoverings line. Determined to create unique and dynamic products that would inspire designers, Mayer named his company “Innovations in Wallcoverings” and set out to live up to the name.

Forty years later, Innovations has revolutionized the industry. In 1995, while working with fabric-backed vinyls, Innovations discovered Alchemy, the first fabric-faced vinyl to come to the contract market. They were the first to introduce a line of environmentally-friendly wallcoverings, the Innvironments collection, in 2000, and launched the first commercially viable cork wallcovering in 1999.

Driven by design, Innovations has become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of innovative wallcoverings and now offers a curated selection of faux leathers and sheers. Led by Founder and CEO Rudy Mayer and his son Vice President Alex Mayer, the Innovations Design Studio carries on the legacy, developing unique and creative solutions for the vertical plane.

DESIGN STUDIO

The Innovations Design Studio collaborates with artisans around the world to develop solutions for the vertical surface: wallcoverings and sheers. They are a team of creators, led by Founder and CEO Rudy Mayer, with combined experience in interior design, material sourcing and art.

Based in fashionable Soho, New York, Innovations’ designers find inspiration from the artists and galleries surrounding the Design Studio, as well as from their far-flung travels in search of unique materials. They’ve found woodworkers in Japan, weavers in the Philippines and couture apparel fabrications in Europe and together learned how to translate beautiful craft onto the vertical wall.

Starting with a deep understanding of materials and designers’ needs, the Design Studio layers their day-to-day experience with fashion, jewelry and nature with an instinct for the industry. As artists, they embrace innovation and the unexpected and refine a product until it turns an ordinary wall into a work of art.
