ZUBER & CIE
EST. 1797 · RIXHEIM, ALSACE, FRANCE
The oldest surviving wallcovering manufacturer in the world. For over two centuries, Zuber has created extraordinary scenic panoramic wallcoverings, fabrics, and leathers using traditional woodblock-printing techniques passed down through generations of master artisans.
A LIVING HERITAGE
Founded in 1797 in a former commandry of the Teutonic Knights, the Zuber factory in Rixheim, Alsace remains the last in the world to produce wallcoverings using the original 18th-century woodblock-printing technique.
The factory preserves an extraordinary archive of more than 130,000 documents dating from its inception, alongside 150,000 hand-carved woodblocks created by its artisans between 1797 and 1870 — an unmatched collection in the history of decorative arts.
Zuber scenic panoramic wallcovering — a tradition of grand-scale artistry
MASTER CRAFTSMANSHIP
Each Zuber scenic wallcovering is a masterwork requiring hundreds of individual woodblocks and thousands of hand-mixed colors. A single panoramic design can take months to print, with each impression laid by hand using techniques unchanged since the factory's founding.
The history of Zuber mirrors the history of European wallcovering itself. Originally established when a fabric printer from Mulhouse created a paper printing workshop for his son, the manufactory quickly became renowned for its scenic panoramas — sweeping landscapes, exotic gardens, and architectural fantasies that transformed rooms into immersive environments.

THE ARCHIVES
Zuber's archive represents one of the most significant collections in the decorative arts. The 150,000 woodblocks — each hand-carved from pearwood — allow the factory to reproduce any design from its 200+ year catalog on demand.
These blocks, combined with Zuber's proprietary color formulations and traditional printing methods, produce wallcoverings of extraordinary depth and richness that modern digital printing cannot replicate.
