Jim Dultz: From Emmy - Winning Hollywood Designer to Glass Light Sculptor

Jim Dultz

Glass Light Sculptor • Carmel Valley, California

“I have been fascinated by illusions for as long as I can remember and have incorporated them in my art, as an art director and designer of theatrical productions, television shows and feature films in Los Angeles. For my most recent work, I have been experimenting with a variety of prismatic elements — glass and acrylic rods, triangular prisms, dichroic glass cubes — to refract the underlying images in surprising ways so that the images appear to move and change colors as you interact with them.”

— Jim Dultz

From Hollywood to Glass Art

Jim Dultz’s fascination with illusions began in childhood. By age five, he was creating marionette puppet shows, performing magic tricks, and drawing portraits. Inspired by View-Master 3-D reels and animated television programs, he channeled that wonder into a distinguished four-decade career in entertainment design and production in Los Angeles.

His entertainment industry work included designing puppet television shows and films including Muppets Tonight, Greg the Bunny, and Team America: World Police. He also created hundreds of cartoon puns published nationally in The Funny Times.

Awards & Accolades

  • Emmy Award — Muppets Tonight
  • Art Directors Guild “Excellence in Production Design Award” — What Dreams May Come
  • Cable Ace Award — Fallen Angels
  • Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (1996)
  • Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (2005)

The Art of Light

Now retired and based in Carmel Valley, California, Dultz focuses on “Low-Tech Lenticular” works — compositions using prismatic elements including glass and acrylic rods, triangular prisms, and dichroic glass cubes layered over vibrant, rectilinear graphic patterns. As viewers move around the pieces, the underlying images appear to shift, shimmer, and change color in surprising ways.

His goal, as he puts it: “to amuse, delight and entertain through the art I create.”
