Pattern Description:
Old Hollywood Eccentricity meets Overgrown Theatrical Mansions...
Witch and Watchman was founded in London in 2014 by Helen Wilson after graduating from Central St Martins. Helen is the artist and designer behind Witch and Watchman’s striking wallpaper and fabric designs.
Looking to create designs that resemble a modern take on Chinoiserie, Witch & Watchman conceives bold and elaborate prints with a dark, mysterious and eccentric aesthetic. The designs stem from a range of sources including; Helen’s love of painting birds, animals and plants and a passion for eccentric wallpapers and fabrics often found in Hollywood mansions and stately homes.
Helen has taken inspiration from Film Noir such as Sunset Boulevard and Citizen Kane, as well as looking at old houses full of personality, such as the iconic Hearst Castle (The real life Xanadu), Miss Haversham’s house in Great Expectations and the Addams Family abode from the old black and white TV show. Helen wanted to replicate the feeling of old, theatrical Hollywood mansions overgrown with flora where whimsicality fills the walls, the wallpapers tell a story one of peculiarity and dark romanticism, fused with nonconformity and unconventionality to create a stunning range that’s romantic yet mysterious.
Every element in each design has been hand painted in oil on canvas by Helen, then digitally reproduced onto wallpaper and fabric using top quality manufacturers in the UK.
